Postnatal recovery: when should you start physiotherapy?

20 July 2026 · Reliever Physiotherapy Clinic

Pregnancy and delivery place enormous demands on your body — your core, pelvic floor and posture all change. “Just rest” isn’t enough; guided recovery helps you heal properly and prevents problems years later.

When can you start?

  • Normal delivery: gentle pelvic floor and breathing exercises can begin within days. A structured programme usually starts around 6 weeks, after your doctor’s check-up.
  • C-section: gentle movement and breathing work early; structured core and scar rehab typically begins at 6–8 weeks with your doctor’s clearance.

Every recovery is different — your first session always starts with an assessment, not assumptions.

What postnatal physio helps with

  • Core weakness & diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
  • Pelvic floor issues — leaking urine when you cough, sneeze or exercise is common but not something you have to live with
  • Back and hip pain from pregnancy, feeding posture and carrying your baby
  • C-section scar recovery — mobility, comfort and core reactivation
  • Safe return to exercise — progressing without injury

It’s never too late

Whether your baby is 6 weeks or 6 years old, it’s not too late to address core weakness, pelvic floor symptoms or persistent pain.

At Reliever, women’s health sessions are led by Dr. Rakhi Nagar (MPT, OBG & Gynae) in a private, comfortable setting. Book a consultation on WhatsApp to discuss your recovery.
