What to expect at your first physiotherapy session
1 September 2026 · Reliever Physiotherapy Clinic
Walking into a physiotherapy clinic for the first time can feel unfamiliar. Here’s what actually happens — so you can arrive relaxed and get the most out of your session.
1. We listen first
Your physiotherapist will ask about your pain or concern: when it started, what makes it better or worse, your medical history, and what you want to get back to doing — whether that’s work, sport or simply sleeping without pain.
2. Physical assessment
Next comes a hands-on assessment. Depending on your condition, this may include:
- Checking your range of motion — how far a joint moves
- Strength testing of the affected muscles
- Observing your posture and movement patterns
- Specific clinical tests to pinpoint the source of pain
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in — that’s all you need to prepare.
3. Your diagnosis, explained simply
We’ll explain what’s causing your symptoms in plain language — no jargon. Understanding your own condition is the first step in recovery.
4. Treatment begins on day one
Most first sessions include some treatment right away — manual therapy, guided exercises, or pain-relief modalities like electrotherapy. You’ll leave with a clear plan: how many sessions you’ll likely need, and simple exercises to do at home.
5. We measure your progress
At Reliever, we track your range of motion, strength and pain levels every session. Recovery isn’t guesswork — you should be able to see yourself improving.
